It is the mission of Orcas Island Tennis Club Association (OTC) to encourage the game of tennis in an atmosphere of camaraderie, while fostering friendships off the court by hosting social events throughout the year at OTC’s clubhouse and other venues.
In March 1979, a group of Orcas Island friends were enjoying a vacation on Maui, a vacation that included tennis. They had so much fun that they decided to keep playing when they got home. One major problem: there were no tennis courts on the island! However, that did not stop John and Betty Burns, Kern and Grace Hendricks and Hal and Carolyn Cook. They enlisted friends Sue and Bill Sutton and Peg and Bill Lindesmith to join them as founders of the club. They found property: The Esterbrooks, not able to graze cattle on their land, agreed to sell the piece of property where our club is located for a fair price and a membership. John Burns was elected the first president. Bob and Ann Gay, among others, became members; Bob, a contractor, oversaw the building of the tennis courts; members did whatever tasks were assigned, and the courts were completed in five weeks!
And so it came to pass, on July 17, 1979, that champagne toasts were raised to the new Orcas Tennis Club – and play began. The clubhouse came next. Member Art Lindholm, assisted by all the members, built the architect-designed building. In June of 1980, another celebration was held to toast the opening of the clubhouse. Many good times have been had since then and continue to this day.
